Traditional Chinese Medicine ("TCM") is an integral part of Chinese culture. It has made great contributions to the prosperity of China. Today both of TCM and western medicine are being used in providing medical and health services in China. TCM, with its unique diagnostic methods, systematic approach, abundant historical literature and materials, has attracted many attentions from the international community. TCM is well recognized for its remarkable effectiveness in off setting the side effect caused by the toxic and chemical treatment of cancer cases in the western medical system.

In China, TCM is under the administration of State Administration of TCM and Pharmacology. TCM and its development are regulated. National strategies, law and regulations governing TCM are now in place to guide and promote the research and development in this promising industry.

TCM is defined as a medical science governing the theory and practice of traditional Chinese medicine. It includes Chinese medication, pharmacology/herbalogy, acupuncture, massage and Qigong.

Hospitals in China are classified as specialized in western medical system, TCM or both. TCM is now available to 75% of the areas in China. TCM has been very effective in the treatment of diseases such as cardio-cerebro-vascular, immunogenic, tumors, bone fracture, etc. Scientific research and clinic experiments in TCM are continuously progressing. Successes have been made in many of the areas such as in circulating paths of meridians; in Zheng-syndrome, in diagnostic indexes; in therapeutic principles, in healing emergency patients with shock, acute DIC, acute myocardial infarction and acute renal failure. For treatment of bone fracture, method is adopted based on the theory of combination of mobilization and immobilization. Non-antibacterial compound prescriptions are used successfully in treatment of bacterial infection. In treatment of cancers, Fuzheng Guben compound prescriptions, though devoid of inhibitory effects on cancer cells, could cause the shrink of the mass of cancer. TCM provides a non-surgical approach to the treatment of acute abdomen.

Acupuncture anesthesia and acupuncture analgesia has promoted the acupuncture therapy to the world. Since the founding of the World Federation of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Societies (WFAS) in 1987,Chinese specialists in acupuncture have been selected three times as the chairman of the Federation. They have made outstanding contributions to the promotion and development of acupuncture.

Traditional Chinese Material Medica (TCMM) now becomes of a new branch in TCM. In the 80's, remarkable results were achieved in the research on natural and traditional drugs. The extraction of Qinghaosu from Chinese drugs was seen as a breakthrough in research on anti-malarial remedies. Researches on Qinghaosu and treatment of urinary system with Chinese drugs have been awarded the Albert Einstein World Science Award. With the transformation of TCMM, it will open up a new path to find new drugs and new treatments. In order to ensure the quality and supply of crude drugs, more than 600 production bases and 13,000 farms have been set up. There are more than 800 pharmaceutical factories of Chinese drugs with annual production over 400,000 tons in more than 5,000 varieties.

Universities and colleges in China are providing degree and diploma courses in TCM. It takes seven years of university education to complete a Doctoral degree in TCM. Cross education in both TCM and western system are provided to medical students with major in either one of the systems. Professional training is offered at night school or through corresponding courses.

The attitude towards traditional Chinese medicine and pharmacy across the world is changing. A large number of specialists in TCM have been invited by countries in Asia, Europe, America and others to give lectures on TCM or to conduct activities in TCM therapy and scientific research. In China, among the foreign students in natural sciences, those who major in traditional Chinese medicine accounts for the highest percentage. World Health Organization has established 7 collaborating centers of traditional medicine and pharmacology. International training centers have been set up in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing and Xiame rsonnel from over the world. Colleges of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture have been founded in France, US, Italy and Australia. An institute of TCM theoretical research has been set up in the Munich University of Germany. Cooperation in TCM has been established between China and Japan, the United State and Germany.

There are fundamental differences in TCM and the western medical system. With some understanding of Chinese culture and philosophies, it may help one to see through and start to appreciate the value of TCM.

Traditional Chinese medicine eases chemotherapy side effects

author: earth times

Traditional Chinese medicine could help ease the side effects of chemotheraphy for cancer patients, according to a study carried out by researchers in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China, media reports said Saturday.

“A chemotherapy regimen can last a few months and many patients experience nausea, vomiting and fatigue,” The Business Times quoted Dr Tony Mok Shu Kam, professor of clinical oncology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, as saying. “For some people, it can get quite bad.”

Chemotherapy involves chemical agents to stop cancer cells from growing and is widely used in treatments.

Mok, who will speak on Sunday at British medical journal Lancet’s forum in Singapore, said the latest study involved breast and colon cancer patients.

“All the selected patients were seen not only by an oncologist but by a traditional herbalist, who then prescribed an individualized herbal recipe,” Mok told the newspaper.

Depending on a code known only to the pharmacist, the patient received either the recipe or a placebo, Mok said. The study successfully demonstrated that herbal remedies can help ease the side effects.

Mok’s study is the latest in a wave of herbal medical research triggered in China in the mid-1990s with the appearance of Kanglaite, a drug containing a herbal extract which is China’s top-selling cancer treatment, the report said. It’s use has not been approved outside the country.

Mok cautioned that traditional Chinese medicine alone cannot effectively treat cancer and should not be used as a primary mode of treatment. Herbal remedies play an auxiliary role by helping to relieve symptoms associated with treatments.

“While it is true many herbs may have anti-cancer properties, that’s not the same as saying these herbs can cure or treat cancer,” Mok told the newspaper.

What is needed are high-quality clinical trials on traditional medicine, Mok stressed.

China’s traditional medicine to use scientific help to expand market

author:xinhua

The Chinese government is to fund scientific research into traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to improve standards and to study new applications in order to expand its appeal abroad as an effective alternative to Western remedies and chemicals.

In a development outline on TCM, jointly prepared by 16 ministries, the government said that in the next 13 years, it would concentrate scientific support for traditional medicine as it might become “the breakthrough of Chinese innovation on the world stage”.

“Science might solve the key problems of traditional medicine’s development in modern times, so as to complement the ways we view and treat diseases,” the outline said.

It also set a goal to help traditional healing methods and herbal medicines gain a footing on overseas “mainstream” health care markets by 2020.

The government also aims to launch international research programs to promote TCM and establish two influential traditional medicine research institutes and information exchange centers.

Over the past five years, the government has invested $740m yuan (US$92.5m) in TCM research and development.

The plan also said the central and local governments would increase funding for TCM scientific research and actively seek investment from domestic businesses and overseas sources.

It said government will also try to establish a better system of standards for TCM treatments, drug production, medical scientific research and market entry.

Long before the start of modern medical science, the Chinese had developed complex theories in treating illness. Folk doctors used simple tools such as acupuncture needles and concocted remedies from natural ingredients, such as wild plants and animal parts.

The first Chinese medical classic — The Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Medicine — dates back to between 403 BC and 221 BC. Ancient urn fragments suggest the Chinese might have a history of brewing herbs to treat diseases going back 8,000 years.

But TCM declined in the mid 19th Century due to the growing popularity of Western medicine. TCM was even officially banned for a time under the rule of the Kuomintang Party.

After the founding of the people’s republic, TCM was rehabilitated and developed along side Western medicine. About 3,000 hospitals in China provide TCM treatments to nearly 234 million patients each year.

Despite its popularity, TCM is not widely used in health care systems abroad and faces criticism at home. Among the accusations, critics say TCM’s theories lack scientific evidence and its remedies are ineffective and, in some cases, unsafe.

A nationwide debate erupted over the survival of TCM last year after an on-line proposal by Zhang Gongyao, a professor with Central South University, that health authorities remove TCM practices from national health services.

The Ministry of Health has strongly opposed the proposal, saying, “TCM is an inseparable and important component of China’s health sector.” Many outraged opponents said Zhang’s ideas “ignored history and might kill off Chinese culture”.

Other health experts say TCM is and should be widely used in China’s public health care system as many low-income families cannot afford Western medicines. If developed well, TCM could even reverse the perception of the money-obsessed culture of health care caused by expensive Western treatments and chemical drugs, they said.

Speaking on TCM’s shortcomings, Liu Gengtao, a research fellow with Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, said TCM practitioners could learn more about diagnosing illnesses using Western medical techniques.

He welcomed the government plan, saying it could prompt researchers to use science to interpret the values and unique theories of traditional medicine and speed up the development of marketable and effective herbal medicines by combining the best of Eastern and the Western practices.

“China will develop a number of new herbal medicines in the next 10 to 20 years,” Liu said.

“Unlike western medicine, which focuses solely on the disease, Chinese traditional remedy takes a holistic approach.” said Wang Jie, president of the Guanganmen Hospital.

He said the co-existence of TCM and Western medicine was unique to China’s health system, and by incorporating the two, China might invent an advanced system of medicine and take the global lead in medical science.

He thought TCM could have “more advantage” in treating chronic illnesses such as cancers, but said more research should be done to gain the scientific evidence.

China says traditional medicine effective on A/H1N1 flu patients

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) had proved effective for preventing and curing A/H1N1 flu in clinical tests, Beijing health authorities said Wednesday.

After five months’ scientific research, the effectiveness of TCM on A/H1N1 flu patients had been proved in clinical tests, said the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau.

The city has reserved 2 million TCM doses to fight against the flu.

“The Beijing municipal government has invested 10 million yuan (1.4 million U.S. dollars) to test the effectiveness and safety of TCM to treat A/H1N1 flu since May,” said Zhao Jing, head ofBeijing Administration of TCM.

Zhao said as of Sept. 1, 326 of 845 confirmed cases of A/H1N1 in Beijing had been cured with TCM treatments.

“It has proved very effective to use TCM and a combination of TCM and Western medicine to treat A/H1N1 flu patients,” Zhao said.

Wang Yuguang, a senior expert with Beijing Ditan Hospital, which has been designated to treat A/H1N1 flu cases in the city, said all 184 patients who received TCM treatment at the hospital had been discharged after full recovery.

“Clinical tests have showed that TCM doses help reduce symptoms of fever, sore throat and cough,” he said. “No side effects and adverse reactions have been reported.”
